Hailsham Hockey Club is preparing for its most exciting and challenging season for many a year.
The club has taken the bold move of reintroducing a mens second eleven that will play in Sussex Open League Division 4. Club captain Richard Bishop commented:
"Three or four years ago the whole future of the club looked in doubt but thanks to some gutsy performances on the pitch and some imaginative recruitment activity we have started to attract new players and also welcomed back some old familiar faces. Launching a second eleven shows that as we approach our centenary in 2002 we want to look forward and ensure that the club is still around in another one hundred years!"
The Hailsham first team will continue to play in Division 1 and with greater competition for places it is hoped that the side can improve on its respectable mid table position of last year.
The Hailsham ladies face the biggest test of all as they prepare for life in Division 2 after their glorious Championship winning season last year. Captain Mary Major is in optimistic mood:
"We don't intend to change our attacking style of play in the higher division. We know it will be tough but we're really looking forward to the challenge."
With the talented mixed eleven completing the line up Hailsham will regularly be fielding four teams each weekend and this alone is seen as a considerable achievement when so many players are attracted to the bigger clubs like Eastbourne and Lewes.
Still without a home town astro Hailsham are delighted to be using the outstanding Park College Eastbourne astro for home matches this year and opposition teams will be entertained afterwards at the Counting House.
Park College will be the venue for the now traditional pre season club game on September 16th with push back at 11.30. This is an opportunity for the whole club to get together and potential new players - men or ladies- are always extremely welcome.
Once again Hailsham are pleased to acknowledge the support they receive from sponsors Cooper Carter Claremont (Solicitors) and Hailsham Town Council.
