After a brilliant run of four consecutive wins Hailsham came unstuck in the most dramatic circumstances on Saturday.
After 40 minutes a confident Hailsham outfit were 3- 0 up and yet somehow they managed to concede four goals in the last half hour. At the final whistle a dejected Hailsham side could barely drag themselves from the pitch such was the mixture of disbelief and disappointment running through the side.
It had all started so well when the consistent James Dyer put Hailsham ahead after twenty minutes following good play down the right by Ian and Steve Johnson. Even better was to follow when Ben Stiles made it two nil getting on the end of a clever short corner routine.
However at half time Hailsham knew that they had done well to protect their own goal as Saxons had attacked with skill and pace especially down both wings and there was certainly no trace of complacency in the ranks.
Inevitably Saxons powered forward in the second half and Hailsham keeper Dave Hathaway was the busier of the two keepers before, against the run of play, Hailsham scored the goal that seemed to put the game beyond Saxons reach. Excellent work by Martin Headey on the right wing saw a powerful cross skilfully flicked in to the net by Steve Johnson.
To their credit the Saxons heads did not go down and bit by bit they clawed their way back into the game pulling one back in the forty fifth minute and then a second after a short corner had been awarded for what looked like a clean tackle by Laurens Dyer. After an hour the equaliser was converted and then the Hailsham roof really fell in when a swift breakaway led to the winning goal. Even in the last few minutes Hailsham all but scored the equaliser that their play deserved but on the day nothing could detract from an astonishing Saxons come back.
Hailsham travel to Brighton on Saturday keen to put this nightmare behind them.
Hailsham ladies were in scorching form on Saturday putting in an irresistible display of attacking hockey against an outclassed Middleton side.
The visitors could scarcely get out of their own half in the first thirty minutes as Hailsham launched wave after wave of attacks. By half time the score was six nil and double figures looked likely but after the break Middleton perhaps wisely decided on damage limitation and brought everyone back to defend. Even so the imperious Hailsham ladies still managed a couple more and finished the game with a supremely satisfying 8 - 0 victory.
Helen Major continued her highly impressive form scoring four whilst Jo Edwards gave excellent support helping herself to a classy hat trick. Alison Headey completed the rout with a well taken goal on a day when Hailsham enjoyed the luxury of being in complete control from the first to the final whistle.
