Hailsham made it three wins in a row as their sparkling run of form continued on Saturday in atrocious conditions. Worthing battled bravely in the driving rain but they were no match for a creative and confident Hailsham outfit.
Ian Johnson was in inspirational hat trick scoring form up front and it was the Hailsham centre forward who started the rout after twenty minutes firing in a goal from the acutest of angles just when it semed that it might be a frustrating afternoon for Hailsham.
The goal allowed Hailsham to relax a little and they began to stroke the ball around with some composure in spite of the conditions scoring a second goal five minutes later when skipper Richard Bishop struck home his first league goal for the club from the left hand side of the D after the ball had rebounded to him from the keeper's pads.
It was clear that there could only be one result now and sure enough Neil Phillips made it three calmly finishing after the ball had ballooned skywards on the edge of the D and then Ian Johnson fired in the fourth goal at the end of a neat short corner routine.
The only surprise in the second half was that Hailsham did not go on to score a lot more goals but they had to be content with just one more when Steve Johnson' decisive run and cross from the right wing was expertly deflected into goal by his marauding brother Ian. At the other end Hailsham keeper Dave Hathaway became a virtual spectator but as clean sheets for Hailsham have been something of a rarity this season no-one was complaining.
This week Hailsham travel to Middleton and Bognor where on this form they should continue their impressive rise up the Division 1 table.
Hailsham ladies got back on the winning track with a spirited victory over Eastbourne.
Honours were even at half time with neither side able to break down well organised defences but at the restart Hailsham raised the tempo of the game and were rewarded with excellent goals from Jo Edwards and Helen Major.
Eastbourne managed to pull one back but with the versatile Helen Brian Davis in outstanding form for Hailsham and Sandra Ellen producing a resolute display in defence a valuable three points were secured.
A poor performance saw Hailsham's second XI comfortably beaten in a bad tempered game.
Hailsham opened the game well and looked the better side for the first 20 minutes.
But once the home team had gone in front there was only going to be one winner.
Southwick took the lead against the run of play on the break after a Hailsham move broke down in midfield. A swift attack by the pacy home team saw the ball end up in the net after a deflection off Damian Martin's stick.
Towards the end of the first half Southwick doubled their lead in farcical circumstances.
As Southwick took a short corner Hailsham goalkeeper Craig Tasane shouted at his defence to leave a shot, convinced the ball had not been stopped dead outside the D. The ball trickled unopposed into the net, only for the umpire to award a goal, despite loud complaints from Tasane.
In the second half Hailsham were never in the game and rarely mounted an attack. yet they only conceded one more goal, to leave the scoreline at 3-0.
The game was soured by the attitude of a Southwick forward, who constantly queried decisions and attempted to rile the Hailsham players. Midfielder James Clarke rose to the bait and found himself green carded for telling the Southwick player to shut up.
